What is a Cold Store?

Tuesday 14th January 2014

In short, a cold store is a large room or warehouse where food can be kept to help preserve it. They are many types of cold stores, ranging from reefer containers to portable blast freezers. Cold Stores, also known as cold Rooms, are often used in the food industry, in which food that needs preserving can be kept cool and safe from bacteria.

In the food industry, it is very important to make sure that your product arrives in shops and at the consumers in a hygienic manner. Ultimately, this involves making sure that no bacteria get to the food, so that mould or any other fungi cannot develop.

In the United Kingdom, the Department of Health’s current legislation is that if food is in the danger zone temperature, it must be cooled as quickly as possible. The danger zone temperature is between +8 degrees Celsius and +68 degrees Celsius, which is the temperature where bacteria multiplies fastest.

For large quantities of food to be kept at a low temperature, you’ll need to have an already cooled area where you can store it. This is where the Cool Store comes in. By making a warehouse into a cold store, you can store many tonnes of food in safe conditions without the worries of food going off.

Due to their inherent size, cold stores tend to be built on site at the location of your business, because they’re not small enough to be driven around on lorries (like some Blast Freezers can be). It is possible, although difficult, to convert some rooms into a cold store, although it is a lot of work because you need to install special insulation and other equipment to help regulate the temperature.

When the facilities are not available to build a cold store for your business on your own property, it is also possible to rent out a cold store for a period of time, so that you can make sure you deliver your food at its optimum quality level.
